Introduction

Learn what Mail.Land is and how it can help you send transactional and marketing emails at scale

MailLand is a B2B email delivery platform built for developers and businesses who need reliable, high-volume email sending. Whether you're delivering password resets, order confirmations, newsletters, or marketing campaigns, MailLand provides the infrastructure to get your emails to the inbox.

What Mail.Land Does

MailLand handles two categories of email:

Transactional Email: triggered by user actions. Password resets, order confirmations, account notifications, two-factor codes. These are time-sensitive and require high deliverability.

Marketing Email: sent in bulk to subscriber lists. Newsletters, product announcements, promotions, drip campaigns. These require list management, segmentation, and compliance tools.

Both share the same infrastructure but are separated at the credential level. A transactional credential cannot send bulk marketing emails, and vice versa. This separation protects your sender reputation.

Key Features

Sending

  • REST API: send single emails via POST /v1/transactional/send with JSON payloads. Supports HTML, plain text, templates, attachments, and per-recipient variables.
  • SMTP Relay: connect your existing application via SMTP on port 587 (STARTTLS). Authenticate with your API key.
  • Batch Sending: send to multiple recipients in a single API call via POST /v1/transactional/send-batch. Marketing credentials only.
  • Scheduled Emails: schedule emails up to 7 days in advance. scheduledAt is interpreted as UTC.
  • Templates: create reusable email templates with variable substitution using {{variable}} syntax.

Domains & Deliverability

  • Domain Verification: verify ownership with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC DNS records. MailLand auto-generates DKIM keys.
  • DKIM Signing: MailLand creates a DKIM key for each domain and signs every message with it. Rotating the key is temporarily unavailable; see DKIM key rotation.
  • DNS Health Monitoring: continuous background checks for DNS configuration issues with severity-based alerting.
  • Suppression Management: automatic bounce and complaint handling to protect your sender reputation.

Analytics & Webhooks

  • Real-time Tracking: open and click tracking with per-email granularity.
  • Webhooks: receive HTTP callbacks for delivery, deferral, bounce, complaint, and other events.
  • Email Logs: searchable logs of every email sent, with status, timestamps, and event history.

Account & Security

  • Multi-tenant Workspaces: organize domains, credentials, and team members into separate workspaces.
  • API Key Scoping: restrict credentials by domain, IP address, and channel (API/SMTP).
  • Two-factor Authentication: TOTP-based 2FA for account security.
  • Sandbox Mode: test your integration without sending real emails. Sandbox credentials either accept and log a send without delivering it, or deliver only to addresses on your sandbox allow list. New workspaces are also limited to that allow list until they are verified.

How It Works

The high-level flow for sending an email:

  1. Authenticate: include your API key in the X-API-Key header (REST) or use it as the SMTP password.
  2. Send: POST your email to the API or relay it through SMTP.
  3. Queue: MailLand validates the request, checks rate limits and quotas, and queues the email.
  4. Deliver: the email is processed, signed with DKIM, and delivered to the recipient's mail server.
  5. Track: delivery, deferral, bounce, complaint and inbound events are recorded and forwarded via webhooks.

Send responses return a jobId or messageId you can use to track the email through its lifecycle.

Credential Streams

MailLand enforces a strict separation between transactional and marketing email:

PropertyTransactionalMarketing
Max recipients per send51,000 (10,000 per batch)
Batch sendingNot allowedAllowed
Rate limitsIndependentIndependent
Message ID prefixt_m_
Use casePassword resets, receipts, OTPsNewsletters, promotions, campaigns

This separation is enforced at the credential level. When you create a credential, you choose a stream, Transactional or Marketing. The stream determines what operations are available.
